Rights and Responsibilities of School Principals: Building the How-to Path to Excellece (K-12 Focus Books)
When I was writing The School Principal's Toolbook I put on my ear plugs and blinders and zeroed in on giving you the best stuff I knew, no nonsense, how-to information that I could never find when I climbed up the teaching/administration ranks. I wrote in order of need and tried to put the obstacles and joys about as you would encounter them. I knew one thing right off: you needed to know your rights first, and your responsibilities at pretty much the same time. When the book was finished and printed, I spoke about it at what seemed like a million conferences and assn gatherings, I realized that I was hearing the same thing every day: how can we get that "rights and responsibilities section" just as a guidebook that we could keep in our pockets or bags to look at it when I want or needed to? So that's exactly what we did--and why it appears in about 50-page portions and thinner but the type is no smaller. You asked for it, and we like the idea so well I'm looking at all seven of my books to see if there are other focus books that teachers (and principals) most want to have in hand. That's why we just released the second focus book: "How to Create the Best Staff Possible," from this same book, now in Kindle. Keep your eyes open! If I was given a book called The School Principal’s Toolbook the first thing I'd want to know would be "what are the principal’s rights and responsibilities! What do others expect of them—others like kids, teachers, parents, the tax-paying public, a superintendent, and the school board?"Next, what would the principals expect in return for guiding our kids and their mentors with love, acumen, and perhaps (now and then) a pinch of magic? What’s their trade-off for designing and putting into action educational opportunities for school children? For helping open and make sense of the world to young, eager, hungry minds? So when I wrote “Rights and Responsibilities of School Principals” as the opening chapter (in 2014), to make this critical information clear and compact, I arranged the most important rights and responsibilities into 10 no-nonsense steps, then added an additional step about bullying. Then, to make that critical information more easily accessible and easier to tote around when needed, I repackaged that opening chapter and expanded it some, and made it inexpensively available as a paperback or a digital e-book. (Soon it will also be an audiobook.)In composing the rights and responsibilities I tried to relate them to everyday activities and needs so they would read like a roadmap or a guidebook, to help principals at all stages (from brand new to grizzled), and to all other school administrators as well.My credentials? There is a more detailed list at the end of this focus book, but what’s most important right now? I’ve been a principal (and a superintendent) since the days of Chester Arthur, I have six other published K-12 administration books published, and I regularly speak to lots of school heroes. For several decades I've particularly enjoyed presenting academies to administrators. The wisdom and loving wit of hundreds of the principals and leaders I've met has helped me create what follows. What are the questions I am most often asked at the academies, particularly by new administrators?(1) What is expected of me when I start a new job, or move to a new district? (2) Do I have to do all of this by myself? (3) Is this tasking really my job or when can I hand it off to someone else? (4) What if I make a mistake in judgment? (5) What do I really need to know to facilitate change? And (6), am I really considered a role model for others? Let me answer some of those questions on these pages.
